The Psychology of Security - KEYNOTE

We like to think of people as rational risk and cost calculators, but nothing could be further than the truth. Our brains are filled with cognitive shortcuts -- biases -- that allow us to function in a complex society, but also cause us to make security mistakes. An enormous body of research in both behavioural economics and the psychology of decision making illuminates faulty security reasoning about risks, about probability, about costs, and about the decision process itself. You'll find this talk fascinating, illuminating, and depressing; and you'll never look at a human brain in the same way again.
Bruce Schneier, Chief Security Technology Officer, BT Counterpane an internationally renowned security technologist, Mr. Schneier is referred to by "The Economist" as a "security guru." He is the author of eight books -- including the best sellers "Beyond Fear," "Secrets and Lies," and "Applied Cryptography" -- and hundreds of articles and academic papers. His influential newsletter Crypto-Gram, and blog "Schneier on Security," are read by over 250,000 people. He is a prolific writer and lecturer, a frequent guest on television and radio, has testified before Congress, and is regularly quoted in the press on issues surrounding security and privacy.
